COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Education program is designed to prepare students to teach physical education to a diverse student population, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, with an emphasis on secondary-level education. The curriculum balances theoretical knowledge, scientific understanding, practical skills, and teaching pedagogy to develop well-rounded educators in physical education. Students engage in a variety of activity courses that focus on fitness and wellness, weight training, cardiovascular conditioning, and the pedagogy of these physical activities, ensuring they gain both hands-on experience and teaching techniques specific to physical fitness.The program includes foundational science courses essential for understanding human movement and performance. Applied anatomy and physiology courses explore the structure and function of the body, while kinesiology offers insights into the mechanics of movement. Courses on physical growth and motor development examine how students progress physically at different ages, helping future educators tailor their instruction to developmental needs.Pedagogical training is a key component, equipping students with effective methods for teaching a wide range of physical activities and sports. Instruction covers individual and dual sports, team sports, and dance, along with specialized areas such as adapted physical education for students with special needs. The curriculum also integrates the use of technology to enhance physical education instruction and explores curriculum theory and design, preparing students to develop effective lesson plans and programs.In the final semester, students complete a student teaching internship in various schools throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. This internship provides invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to apply their knowledge, practice teaching skills, and gain confidence in diverse educational settings. Overall, the program cultivates competent, knowledgeable, and adaptable physical education teachers ready to promote health and wellness among their students.
