COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at CUC requires 31 credit hours within the major, contributing to a total of 120 credit hours for the degree, including general education and electives. The program begins with Intermediate Spanish I and II, providing students with a solid foundation in grammar, conversation, and writing. Advanced coursework includes Spanish Conversation and Composition and Introduction to Spanish Literature, emphasizing fluency, analytical skills, and literary appreciation. Students also explore cultural contexts through courses such as Latin American Cultures and Civilization or Hispanic Cultures in the United States, allowing them to understand the social, historical, and cultural dimensions of the Spanish-speaking world. Literature studies include options like Studies in Latin American Literature, Latin American Short Stories, or Studies in Spanish Literature, providing opportunities for in-depth analysis of literary works. Students complete nine credit hours of electives at the 4000 level or above, which allow for further specialization and advanced language study. Transfer credit from CLEP examinations can apply toward Elementary and Intermediate Spanish courses but cannot be applied to the major at the elementary level. With a combination of language, literature, and cultural courses, the program develops proficiency in Spanish, prepares students for study abroad or mission opportunities, and equips them with the skills needed for careers in education, international service, or other Spanish-related fields.
