COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology requires a total of 33 credit hours within the major, as part of a 120-credit-hour degree that includes general education and elective courses. The core curriculum consists of four required courses: Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Social Research Methods, and Directed Research, which provide a foundation in sociological concepts, analytical skills, and research methodology. In addition to these core courses, students select 21 credit hours of electives from a broad range of topics, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests. Elective options include Marriage and the Family, Cultural Anthropology, Race, Ethnicity, and Racism in the U.S., Probation, Parole and Re-entry, Technology, Society, and the Future, Pop Culture, Media, and Consumption, Juvenile Delinquency, Globalization and Social Change, Law and Society, Criminological Theory, Sociology of Corrections, Sociology of Policing, Social Inequality, Urban Communities, Social Movements, Human Rights, and other special topics or independent study courses. The program also offers internship opportunities to integrate academic learning with practical experience. Through this combination of core courses, electives, research, and experiential learning, students gain a comprehensive understanding of social structures, inequality, cultural dynamics, and contemporary social issues, preparing them for diverse careers or advanced study in sociology and related fields.
