COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Art Therapy at Concordia University Chicago is designed to prepare students for graduate study in art therapy and related mental health professions. Students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all major coursework to ensure mastery of both artistic and psychological foundations. The program combines a robust studio art curriculum with essential psychology courses, providing a well-rounded pre-professional education. Studio art courses include Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Basic Studio, Drawing Studio, Figure Drawing Studio, and Professional Strategies for the Visual Artist, which help students develop technical skills, creative expression, and professional preparation. Students also select five advanced studio courses, such as Painting, Digital Photography, Ceramics, Printmaking, or Artists’ Books, allowing them to explore diverse mediums and develop a strong, versatile portfolio required for graduate school. The psychology component covers General Psychology, Developmental Psychology: Life Span, Interpersonal Skills for the Helping Professions, Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Introduction to Art Therapy, equipping students with foundational knowledge to understand client needs and apply therapeutic techniques effectively. Through this interdisciplinary approach, students gain the skills, knowledge, and professional readiness to pursue careers in art therapy, mental health, or related fields, blending creative practice with evidence-based psychological principles.
