COURSE CURRICULUM

The B.A. in English at Concordia University Chicago requires a total of 37 credit hours within the major and is designed to provide a well-rounded foundation in literature, linguistics, and writing while allowing flexibility for individual interests. Core courses include Linguistics, British Literature I and II, Major American Authors, Literary Theory and Criticism, Shakespeare, and a Research and Writing Capstone, ensuring students gain both historical and theoretical perspectives on literature. Students are also required to complete an upper-level writing course, such as Introduction to Creative Writing, and a world literature course, choosing between Classical World Literature or Modern World Literature. To fulfill the 20th-century literature requirement, students select one course from options including U.S. Latina/o Literature, African American Literature, Twentieth Century American Fiction, Modern Drama, or Twentieth Century Poetry, which provides exposure to diverse literary voices and cultural contexts. Additionally, students choose three more elective courses with an ENG prefix to further explore literary topics of personal interest. It is important to note that introductory courses like English Composition and Writing About Literature do not count toward the major.
