COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art Education program at Concordia University Chicago offers a well-rounded and rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for careers as art educators. The program begins with foundational courses in visual arts, including Introduction to Visual Arts, 2D and 3D Basic Studio, and Drawing Studio, alongside general education requirements such as composition and psychology. As students progress, they delve deeper into both art and education through courses like Educational Psychology, Western and Non-Western Art, and specialized art education methods courses that focus on curriculum development and instructional strategies. Studio work continues with classes in ceramics, sculpture, digital photography, graphic design, painting, fiber arts, and printmaking, allowing students to build technical skills across diverse media. Field experiences are integrated early in the program, with students observing and assisting in local classrooms to gain practical insights into teaching. These experiences gradually increase in responsibility and complexity, culminating in a 16-week student teaching internship where candidates manage and teach their own classrooms. This internship is supported by regular seminars that encourage reflection and professional development. Throughout the program, students also take courses in inclusive teaching practices, classroom management, and assessment, ensuring they are equipped to handle diverse learning environments. The program’s proximity to Chicago provides students with exposure to a wide socio-economic and cultural range of schools, enriching their training. Additionally, students complete a senior capstone project and participate in exhibitions, further enhancing their portfolios.
