COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Development and Family Studies major offers students the opportunity to specialize through several concentrations that provide focused training, hands-on experience, and preparation for a variety of careers in health, education, and human services. These concentrations allow students to tailor their academic path based on their interests while gaining practical skills, mentorship, and internship opportunities that support professional growth before graduation.One concentration is Behavioral and Mental Health Programs, designed for students interested in careers as counselors, therapists, or other helping professionals. This track prepares students to work in education, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations, with a focus on developing and implementing community-based programs that promote wellness for individuals, youth, adults, and families. It emphasizes understanding mental health needs and supporting positive behavioral outcomes across diverse populations.The Early Childhood Professions concentration focuses on working with young children from infancy through third grade. Students are prepared for roles in education, healthcare, and social service settings, including foster care and adoption services. This pathway emphasizes child development, early learning, and supportive care environments that foster healthy growth during critical early years.The General Human Development and Family Studies concentration serves as a flexible, well-rounded option for students. It includes coursework in human development, psychology, social work, and related disciplines, allowing students to build a broad foundation in understanding individuals and families across the lifespan.Leadership and Advocacy prepares students to support individuals, families, and communities through roles focused on social justice and leadership. Coursework includes topics such as public policy, communication, marketing, management, and finance, equipping students to advocate effectively and lead organizational efforts that promote equity and well-being.The Pre-Health Professions concentration is designed for students planning careers or graduate study in healthcare fields. It ensures students meet necessary prerequisites while developing a strong understanding of human development and care across populations. In addition, Pre-Nursing (available Fall 2026) prepares students specifically for nursing school and clinical careers.
