The History major offers students the opportunity to specialize through several concentrations that provide deeper academic focus, practical skills, and pathways toward specific careers. These concentrations allow students to tailor their studies to particular interests while gaining valuable experience, mentorship, and internship opportunities that support their professional development.One option is Digital and Public History, which introduces students to emerging digital tools used in historical research and public education. This concentration prepares students for careers in the growing field of public history, where historians engage audiences through museums, national parks, documentaries, podcasts, digital archives, and other public platforms. It emphasizes how technology can be used to make historical knowledge more accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. An accelerated version of this program is also available for students seeking a faster academic pathway.The General History concentration allows students to focus on specific time periods, regions, and major historical themes. These may include topics such as race and gender, environmental history, borderlands and frontiers, or empire and revolution. This flexible track encourages in-depth exploration of historical questions and helps students develop strong analytical and research skills. An accelerated option is also available.The Language concentration focuses on studying historical developments within regions that share a common language and cultural background. This approach allows students to better understand how language, culture, and history intersect across different societies and time periods. An accelerated program option is also available for this concentration.The Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration is designed for students who may shift their academic focus during their degree. It helps History majors transition smoothly from the Social Studies Teaching track to another area of study, ensuring timely graduation while maintaining a strong foundation in historical and social science learning.Finally, the Social Studies Teaching concentration prepares students who wish to become middle school, junior high, or high school history teachers. This pathway combines deep historical content knowledge with essential teaching skills, equipping future educators to succeed in modern classrooms.
