COURSE CURRICULUM

Graduates of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education major gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the challenges faced by families and consumers in today’s society, along with the ability to teach adolescents and young adults how to make informed, responsible life decisions. The program prepares students for teacher licensure and supports them in pursuing meaningful and impactful careers in education and related fields.With this preparation, graduates are qualified to work as middle school or junior high teachers and high school teachers, where they can directly influence students’ development through instruction in life skills-based subjects. Many also pursue roles beyond traditional classroom teaching, applying their knowledge in broader community and educational settings.Career opportunities include working as cooperative extension agents, where professionals provide research-based education to communities on topics such as nutrition, family development, and financial literacy. Others may become consumer information specialists, helping individuals and organizations understand and make better use of consumer-related information.Graduates may also work as writers or developers of educational materials, creating curriculum resources, textbooks, and learning tools for schools and educational organizations. Additional pathways include employment in governmental agencies, community organizations, or nonprofit groups focused on family services, youth development, or public education initiatives.Some graduates choose roles such as child or youth family advocates, supporting the well-being and rights of young people and families, or wellness directors, where they promote health and holistic well-being in educational or community settings. Others may expand their global impact by serving as Peace Corps volunteers, contributing to education and community development efforts around the world.
