COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Studies major offers several concentrations that allow students to specialize in specific world regions or take a broader global approach while developing strong language skills and interdisciplinary knowledge.The Asian Studies concentration focuses on the cultures, histories, religions, philosophies, literature, art, and political systems of Asia. Students also complete three years of language study—such as Chinese, Japanese, or another approved language—to deepen their ability to engage with and interpret the region. Areas of study include China, Japan, Korea, the Indian Subcontinent, the Pacific Islands, and other parts of Asia.The European Studies concentration explores Europe through a similar interdisciplinary lens, combining history, religion, philosophy, literature, art, and political science. Students study a European language such as French, German, Russian, or Spanish for three years, equipping them to better understand the continent’s cultural and historical complexity.The Global Studies concentration allows students to take a broader approach by examining global issues across multiple regions. Students can shape their academic path through interdisciplinary coursework while completing either three years of one foreign language or two years each of two languages.The Latin American Studies concentration focuses on the historical development and contemporary realities of Latin America. Coursework spans disciplines such as history, economics, sociology, political science, anthropology, literature, and art, along with three years of Spanish language study to support deep regional understanding.The Middle East and North African Studies concentration examines the cultures and societies of this region through history, religion, philosophy, literature, and art. Students also complete three years of a foreign language to build strong interpretive and communication skills related to the region.Overall, these concentrations prepare students for advanced regional expertise and global careers by combining language proficiency with interdisciplinary cultural and political understanding.
