COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ethnic Studies major offers several concentrations that allow students to specialize in particular areas while gaining deeper knowledge and practical experience. These options help students focus their academic path, build mentorship connections, and prepare for specific careers in education, advocacy, research, and community work.The Community Organizing and Institutional Change concentration focuses on the history and methods used by diverse communities to pursue civil rights and social justice. Students learn how to recognize community needs, engage respectfully with different groups, and organize efforts that promote equity and positive change. This pathway prepares students to support and guide organizations and institutions working toward social transformation.The Global Race, Power, and Resistance concentration examines issues such as transnationalism, migration, diaspora, and activism. Students explore how colonialism, imperialism, and racial and ethnic ideologies have shaped societies around the world. This concentration emphasizes global perspectives and helps students understand resistance movements and systems of power on an international scale.The Social Studies Teaching concentration prepares students for teacher licensure at the middle and high school levels. It focuses on developing strong knowledge of history and social issues, particularly those affecting historically marginalized populations. By incorporating ethnic studies and gender and sexuality studies, this pathway provides future educators with a broad and inclusive foundation for teaching social studies.
