COURSE CURRICULUM

The English major at CSU offers several concentrations that allow students to specialize in a particular area of interest while gaining deeper knowledge and hands-on experience within the field. These concentrations help students develop focused skills, connect with faculty mentors, and prepare for specific career paths after graduation.The Creative Writing concentration allows students to strengthen their skills across multiple genres while developing a unique creative voice. Through workshop-based courses, students read and critique each other’s work, gaining valuable experience in collaboration, revision, and storytelling craft. The English Education concentration is designed for students who want to become language arts teachers. It includes coursework in literature, writing, and language, along with classroom experience working with 6th–12th grade students. Students in this track may also earn a teaching endorsement in English/Language Arts in Colorado.The Integrated English Studies concentration offers flexibility for students to design a customized program by combining areas such as literature, linguistics, creative writing, and rhetoric. This interdisciplinary approach encourages collaboration and allows students to build a personalized academic pathway. The Linguistics concentration focuses on the scientific study of language, including how it is acquired, structured, and connected to identity and culture, while also supporting interests in teaching English as a second language.The Literature concentration emphasizes the critical study of poetry, prose, and drama, helping students develop strong analytical and argumentative writing skills while exploring a variety of genres. The Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy concentration focuses on writing theory, communication, and the relationship between language, identity, and power. Overall, these concentrations allow English majors to tailor their studies while building strong communication, analytical, and creative skills applicable to many careers.
