COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Special Education is designed to provide graduate students with comprehensive preparation in research, instructional strategies, and inclusive practices to support diverse learners. The program requires a total of 33 units, with 21 units dedicated to core courses that establish a strong foundation in the field. These core courses cover critical topics such as language development in diverse learners, assessment for planning and instruction, creating supportive learning environments, methods to support inclusive learning, collaboration and consultation in special education, critical issues in the field, and research in special education. In addition to the core courses, students select a nine-unit emphasis area aligned with their professional goals. The Early Childhood Special Education emphasis focuses on language and literacy development and methods for children from birth through kindergarten. The Mild to Moderate Support Needs emphasis emphasizes literacy and instructional methods for K-12 students requiring moderate support. The Extensive Support Needs emphasis prepares students to address the educational needs of K-12 students requiring intensive support. Each emphasis provides specialized coursework that equips students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to serve their chosen population effectively. To complete the degree, students must fulfill a three-unit culminating experience, which can be completed either as a project or a comprehensive examination, satisfying the Graduate Exit Writing Requirement. The Master of Science in Special Education ensures that graduates are prepared to implement research-based strategies, promote inclusive learning environments, and address the diverse academic, social, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities. The program also supports students interested in pursuing advanced research or doctoral study by providing a rigorous foundation in both theory and practice.
