COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Geology is a 30-unit program designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and research experience in geological sciences. The program includes core courses, electives, and a culminating research experience. Core requirements consist of Advanced Environmental Chemistry and Geosciences and a Graduate Seminar, totaling six units, which provide foundational knowledge and exposure to graduate-level research practices.Students select a minimum of 15 units of electives, at least six of which must be at the 5000- or 6000-level. Elective courses cover a broad range of topics such as directed laboratory research, instrumental analysis, advanced geographic information systems, geo-spatial analysis, geomorphology, groundwater hydrology, engineering geology, structural geology, volcanology, environmental geochemistry, and digital mapping, among others. This allows students to tailor their program to their specific interests in geology, earth resources, environmental science, or geospatial applications, while gaining both theoretical and practical expertise.The culminating experience consists of nine units focused on a research thesis and defense. Students begin with Graduate Research Methods and Design, progress through Directed Graduate Research in Geology, and complete the program with a Graduate Thesis. This research experience provides students with the opportunity to engage in independent scientific investigation, develop technical writing skills, and present findings in a professional format. Students are also encouraged to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals, further preparing them for doctoral studies or professional careers in geology. Overall, the program balances rigorous coursework with hands-on research, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for advanced roles in academia, industry, or government geological work.
