COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Sciences is a 30-unit multidisciplinary program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in environmental science while integrating knowledge from related disciplines such as chemistry, geology, biology, geography, economics, health sciences, management, and public administration. Core coursework consists of 15 units and includes subjects like biostatistics, atmospheric chemistry, environmental economics, and advanced environmental chemistry and geosciences. Students also participate in a two-unit graduate seminar to engage in research discussions and develop analytical skills.Students are required to complete a minimum of six units of electives, which may include courses in microbiology, ecology, advanced laboratory research, remote sensing, GIS, environmental hydrology, toxicology, sustainability policy, and internships in chemistry, geology, or environmental studies. Electives allow students to specialize their studies according to their research interests and career goals, while some courses may require prerequisites.The culminating experience accounts for nine units and offers two options. The internship and project option includes graduate research methods, a field internship, and a graduate project with a formal defense, providing applied experience in environmental work. The research and thesis option emphasizes original research, including directed research methods and completion of a thesis, which is also formally defended. Both options aim to ensure mastery of environmental science concepts, critical thinking, and practical or research-based skills.Overall, the program is designed for students with bachelor’s degrees in scientific fields and prepares graduates for professional careers, applied research, or further academic study. By combining core science knowledge, elective specialization, and a significant culminating project or thesis, the program equips students with the skills and experience necessary to address complex environmental challenges in diverse professional and academic contexts. It is structured to be completed in approximately two years, providing both breadth and depth in environmental sciences while fostering analytical, research, and practical problem-solving skills.
