COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Computer Science degree program requires a total of 31 units and provides students with advanced technical knowledge in core areas of computer science. The required coursework, totaling 15 units, includes foundational subjects such as Computation and Complexity Theory, Modern Computer Architecture, Theory of Algorithms and Their Analysis, Software Engineering Concepts, and Operating Systems Concepts and Theory. These courses are designed to ensure a strong conceptual and practical understanding of essential computer science principles. The remaining 16 units are dedicated to a culminating experience, which can be completed through one of three options: examination, project, or thesis.In the Examination Option, students complete a one-unit Graduate Seminar and a comprehensive examination, along with 15 units of elective courses at the 5000- to 6000-level approved by the department graduate committee, with up to 9 units at the 5000-level. The Project Option requires completion of a 4-unit master’s project and 12 units of approved elective coursework. The Thesis Option involves six units of thesis research, combined with 10 units of electives approved by the department. Elective courses allow students to tailor their program to their interests and career goals while deepening expertise in specialized areas of computer science.This structure balances rigorous core training with flexibility in research or applied experience, preparing students for careers in advanced computing, software development, and research, or for further doctoral studies. The program emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications, equipping students with the skills necessary to tackle complex computing challenges and contribute effectively in professional and academic environments. The graduate committee oversees course selection and ensures alignment with the student’s individual academic and professional objectives, while also allowing alternatives if prior coursework overlaps with required classes.
