COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Standing Master of Social Work (MSW) program at California State University, San Bernardino is designed for students who already hold a Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and wish to complete their graduate degree in an accelerated format, either in one or two years. The program begins with a Summer Bridge sequence of courses totaling six units, which includes Social Work Research Bridge, Generalist Practice Bridge, and Generalist Practicum Bridge. These courses serve to reinforce foundational knowledge and prepare students for advanced graduate-level study. Following the bridge courses, students complete the Generalist Curriculum, consisting of Social Work Research II for three units, providing a deeper understanding of research methods in social work practice. The core of the program is the Advanced Generalist Curriculum, which requires 26 units. This curriculum emphasizes both micro and macro practice through courses such as Advanced Generalist Micro Practice I and II, Advanced Generalist Macro Practice I and II, and the Advanced Generalist Practicum I and II, which together total eight units of hands-on field experience. Additionally, students complete three units of research courses, which can be taken as Social Work Research III or Research Project II, and three units of electives that may be chosen from a selection of specialized courses such as Social Work in the Global Perspective, Social Work with Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Public Child Welfare, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Social Work Practice, or with approval from their advisor, from another department. The total program comprises 35 units, integrating advanced classroom instruction with field-based practice, and preparing graduates to assume leadership roles, implement evidence-based interventions, and address complex social challenges in both micro and macro social work settings.
