COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at CSUSB requires a total of 30 units, providing both theoretical foundations and practical teaching experience. The program includes core courses such as Graduate Writing for TESOL (EESL 5050), Language Studies for Educators (EESL 5200), and Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (EESL 5300), which develop students’ academic and instructional skills while integrating technology into language teaching. Methodology courses, including Listening and Speaking Methods in TESOL (EESL 5500), Crosscultural Teaching (EESL 6300), and Literacy in TESOL (EESL 6400), provide strategies for teaching English learners in diverse cultural and linguistic contexts. Students also study Structure, Function and Acquisition of English (EESL 6600) and Principles and Practice in TESOL (EESL 6700) to gain a deeper understanding of the English language and effective pedagogical approaches. Research is emphasized through Research in TESOL (EESL 6800), enabling students to critically analyze language learning and teaching practices. The program also includes a hands-on component, Fieldwork: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (EESL 6900), which allows students to apply instructional strategies in real classroom settings under supervision. The culminating experience for the MA in TESOL is integrated throughout the coursework, enabling students to demonstrate mastery of content, teaching skills, and research competencies. This comprehensive program prepares graduates for careers in K-12 schools, adult education, and international English teaching contexts, equipping them with the expertise to effectively support multilingual learners and advocate for inclusive and equitable language education.
