COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in National Security Studies requires between 30 and 33 units, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop expertise in strategic studies and national security. Core coursework consists of 18 units and includes National Security Policy, Research Methods in Government, Theory and History of Strategy, International Security, Intelligence Assessments and Estimates, and American Foreign Policy. These courses provide students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of national security, preparing them to analyze and respond to complex international challenges. In addition to the core courses, students must complete 12 units of electives, chosen from a wide range of options that allow for specialization in areas such as international economic issues, military geography, foreign relations of the United States, operations analysis, comparative politics, international relations, strategic systems, cyber security, international law, terrorism, regional security studies, intelligence failures, arms control, and national security policy. Electives provide students the flexibility to focus on specific regions, topics, or analytic methods relevant to their career goals or research interests. The program also includes a culminating experience of up to three units, which may be a comprehensive examination, thesis, or other approved capstone project, allowing students to demonstrate mastery of the material and practical application of their knowledge. The MA in National Security Studies is intended for individuals seeking professional advancement in government, military, law enforcement, intelligence, or related private sector positions, as well as for students preparing for doctoral studies. By integrating interdisciplinary perspectives, research methods, and applied analysis, the program equips graduates with the analytical, strategic, and policy skills necessary to address contemporary national security challenges, conduct rigorous research, and contribute effectively to decision-making processes in complex security environments.
