COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Criminal Justice is a 34-unit graduate program designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the field of criminal justice. The program combines core courses in research methods, criminological theory, corrections or policing, statistical analysis, and planning and evaluation, providing a strong foundation for both academic and professional advancement. Students are required to complete nine units of electives, which can be chosen from a wide range of specialized topics, including intelligence and crime analysis, terrorism, homeland security, transnational organized crime, juvenile justice, race, class, and gender in criminal justice, and policy and administration. Electives allow students to tailor their program to their professional interests and career goals, while also providing exposure to emerging areas in the field. The program culminates in a six-unit experience, with students selecting either a thesis or comprehensive examination option. Those choosing the thesis option engage in original research through two thesis courses, allowing them to develop advanced research and analytical skills suitable for further graduate study or research-focused careers. Students opting for the comprehensive examination complete six additional elective units and demonstrate mastery of key criminal justice concepts and competencies through a structured assessment. Overall, this program is designed to equip graduates with the theoretical knowledge, analytical abilities, and practical expertise necessary for leadership, policy, and research roles within law enforcement, corrections, policy development, and other areas of the criminal justice system.
