COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Art and Design requires a total of 30 units, structured to provide both advanced studio practice and academic development in the field. Students complete 6 units each of graduate-level studio work and critique courses, ensuring focused development of artistic skills and critical evaluation abilities. In addition, 3 units are devoted to a Graduate Seminar in Professional Practices, preparing students for professional careers in the visual arts through exposure to topics such as exhibition practices, portfolio development, and professional ethics. Another 3 units are allocated for the Master’s Project in Art, which serves as a culminating experience where students produce a substantial body of work demonstrating their technical skill, conceptual growth, and creative vision. Six units of upper-division Art History coursework provide historical and theoretical grounding, helping students contextualize their work within broader artistic movements and trends. The program also includes six units of electives or independent study, allowing students to explore specialized topics or interdisciplinary interests across other departments, with courses selected in consultation with the Department Graduate Coordinator to align with individual academic and professional goals. This flexible structure balances practical studio training, theoretical study, and independent exploration, equipping graduates with both the creative expertise and critical knowledge needed for professional practice or further graduate-level study.
