COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health requires a total of 65 units within the major as part of the 120 units needed for graduation. The program is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in public health principles, combining scientific knowledge with practical skills to address health issues at the community and global levels. Students must maintain a grade of “C” or better in all upper-division Health Science courses to ensure competency in the field.The lower-division requirements, totaling 13 units, introduce students to core concepts such as health and society, public health fundamentals, basic statistics, and software applications in health sciences. These courses build essential skills in data analysis, health awareness, and the use of technology in public health settings.At the upper-division level, students complete 40 units of advanced coursework covering key areas such as health behavior, environmental and occupational health, global health, nutrition, biostatistics, public health law and ethics, and social determinants of health. Additional courses focus on health administration, epidemiology, program planning, research methods, and professional communication, ensuring students are well-prepared for real-world public health practice. A preparatory course helps students get ready for their final capstone experience.The program includes a three-unit capstone requirement, where students can choose between a community service project, an internship, or an honors thesis. This experience allows students to apply their knowledge in practical settings and gain valuable professional experience.Students also complete nine units of electives, enabling them to explore specialized topics such as infectious diseases, mental health, substance abuse, cultural competency, and global health issues.Overall, the program provides a comprehensive and applied education that prepares graduates for careers in public health or further study in the field.
