COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics requires a total of 75 units within the major as part of the 120 units needed for graduation. The program is structured to provide an in-depth and rigorous understanding of physics, supported by strong mathematical and laboratory training. The lower-division requirements, totaling 38 units, establish a solid foundation in core scientific principles. Students complete courses in calculus, multivariable calculus, and applied linear algebra, along with general chemistry and laboratory work. Introductory physics courses, including general physics with labs, modern physics, and electronics, help students build both theoretical knowledge and practical experimental skills essential for advanced study.At the upper-division level, students complete 37 units focused on advanced and specialized topics in physics. Required courses include mathematical methods of physics, classical mechanics, computational physics, electricity and magnetism (including a second advanced course), statistical and thermal physics, and quantum mechanics. Students also gain hands-on experience through an intermediate laboratory course and complete a senior thesis, which emphasizes independent research, critical thinking, and scientific communication. In some cases, an astronomy course may be substituted for the thesis to fulfill writing-intensive requirements.Additionally, students must complete at least eight units of upper-division electives, chosen with departmental approval. These electives allow exploration of advanced areas such as solid state physics, optics, electronics, quantum mechanics II, astrophysics, and specialized or research-based topics.
