COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is designed for students pursuing graduate studies, careers in mathematics or related fields, or teaching at the secondary level. The degree requires 120 total units, including 63 to 77 units within the mathematics major. Core lower-division courses include Calculus I and II, Multivariable Calculus, Applied Linear Algebra, Statistics with Applications, and a computer science course to build computational and problem-solving skills. Upper-division core courses focus on mathematical reasoning, communication, Euclidean geometry, number theory, real analysis, and algebraic structures, with MATH 3100 satisfying the upper-division writing-intensive requirement.Students select one of three concentrations to tailor their studies. The General Mathematics Concentration emphasizes advanced topics in real analysis, algebra, combinatorics, graph theory, differential equations, differential geometry, complex analysis, topology, and other electives, totaling 27 to 29 units. The Applied Mathematics Concentration integrates mathematics with interdisciplinary coursework in actuarial science, biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, geography, or physics. This concentration includes upper-division courses such as Advanced Linear Algebra and a selection of 18 to 20 elective units, with at least three courses at the 4000-level or above, totaling 30 to 36 units. The Teaching Mathematics Concentration prepares future secondary teachers through specialized courses such as Probability Theory, Problem Solving for Teachers, Senior Seminar for Future Mathematics Educators, and electives in advanced mathematics and teaching-focused courses, totaling 23 units.Across all concentrations, students complete a combination of lower-division, upper-division, and concentration-specific coursework, providing both rigorous mathematical training and flexibility to meet individual career goals. Elective options ensure exposure to advanced topics and interdisciplinary applications, while structured courses develop analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in mathematics, related quantitative fields, or secondary mathematics education, as well as for advanced study in graduate programs or specialized professional training.
