COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Geology at CSU San Bernardino offers students a rigorous curriculum designed to provide both a strong foundation in the geosciences and opportunities to specialize through two distinct concentrations. The program requires a total of 120 units, with 69–78 units specific to geology coursework. The lower-division requirements (26–27 units) ensure students gain essential knowledge in general chemistry, calculus, physics, and introductory geology. Courses such as General Chemistry I & II with labs, Modeling with Calculus or Calculus I, and Introductory Geology or Environmental Geology introduce students to core scientific principles. These courses also fulfill select General Education requirements, giving students a well-rounded academic background.The upper-division coursework (36 units) builds on these fundamentals and emphasizes critical geological concepts and techniques. Students take courses in mineralogy, geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentary geology, and structural geology. Additionally, the program requires participation in advanced field geology, geological research design, undergraduate research, and a senior seminar to develop practical, analytical, and research skills necessary for professional geoscience practice.Students choose a concentration to tailor their studies to career goals. The General Geology Concentration (7 units) provides maximum flexibility, allowing students to select courses in areas such as sedimentary geology, paleontology, tectonics, and environmental geochemistry. At least 3 units must be geology electives, and no more than 3 units can be supervision courses. This concentration is ideal for students interested in graduate school or public service careers in geoscience.The Environmental and Engineering Geology Concentration (13–15 units) is designed for students preparing for professional practice in environmental consulting, engineering geology, or resource management. Required courses include Groundwater Hydrology and Engineering Geology, supplemented by a selection of advanced courses in environmental hydrology, geochemistry, seismic hazard analysis, GIS, and geomorphology. This track emphasizes applied geology, fieldwork, and interdisciplinary integration with geographic techniques to prepare students for licensing and technical careers in the geosciences.Overall, the B.S. in Geology equips students with both theoretical understanding and practical experience, providing the knowledge and skills needed for professional practice, graduate study, and specialized careers in geoscience fields.
