COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music degree requires 79 to 82 units within the major, contributing to a total of 125 to 128 units for graduation. The program includes a comprehensive core of 46 units that provides a strong foundation in music theory, musicianship, conducting, music history, and performance. Students complete a sequence of courses in harmony, musical form, and 20th–21st century theory, along with musicianship training. Additional core components include electronic music production, conducting, piano proficiency, and a three-part music history sequence covering Western music and global traditions. Performance is central to the program, with students required to participate in major ensembles such as orchestra, band, or choir each semester, with up to eight units counting toward the major.Students must select one of several concentrations, each requiring 32 to 36 units and designed to support specific career paths. The Conducting Performance concentration focuses on advanced conducting techniques, score study, pedagogy, and recital performance. The Pre-Teaching Credential concentration prepares students for careers in music education through coursework in instrumental methods, classroom teaching, and music pedagogy, along with a senior project. Performance-based concentrations include Vocal, Instrumental, Piano, and Guitar Performance, each emphasizing applied study and repertoire development across multiple levels, chamber music participation, and recital requirements. Vocal students also complete diction and language studies, while instrumental and keyboard students engage in ensemble and literature courses relevant to their specialization.Across all concentrations, applied study, performance experience, and professional preparation are emphasized. Students progress through structured levels of instruction and must meet performance and academic standards to advance. The curriculum ensures development of technical proficiency, theoretical understanding, and artistic expression.
