COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art Studies (Program Code: VAST) requires a total of 36 units within the major and is structured to provide both foundational and advanced training in studio art, along with exposure to art history and professional practices. The program is designed to support creative exploration while allowing flexibility in course selection across different artistic disciplines.The lower-division requirements consist of 21 units and focus on building fundamental artistic skills. Students begin by selecting three foundation courses (9 units) from areas such as 2D design, 3D design, creative technology, drawing, and the language of art. These courses introduce essential concepts like composition, form, and visual communication. In addition, students complete 6 units of beginning studio courses, choosing from options such as painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, or glass, allowing them to explore different media. Another important component is art history, where students take two lower-division courses (6 units) to develop an understanding of artistic movements, global visual culture, and historical context.The upper-division studio requirements total 12 units and emphasize skill development at an intermediate and advanced level. Students select two intermediate courses (6 units) in areas such as drawing, painting, photography, or sculpture, followed by two upper-division courses (6 units), with at least one at the advanced 4000 level. These courses encourage deeper artistic practice, experimentation, and the development of a personal style. Topics may include digital fabrication, public art, performance art, and socially engaged art.The program concludes with a 3-unit senior capstone course in professional practices, where students prepare for careers or further study by developing portfolios and learning about exhibition and industry standards.
