COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts requires the completion of 49 to 55 units within the major as part of the total 120 units needed for graduation. The program provides a comprehensive foundation in performance, technical theatre, and theatre history, while also allowing students to specialize in a chosen concentration based on their interests and career goals.The lower-division requirements total 12 units and introduce students to the fundamentals of acting and stage design. In addition, students complete 6 units of technical training (except for those in the Theatre for Secondary Education concentration), choosing from areas such as makeup, costume construction, lighting, and sound. These courses build essential practical skills and provide a well-rounded introduction to theatre production.At the upper-division level, students complete 19 units of core coursework, including performance and technical practicums, directing, theatre history, and play criticism. Students also study dramatic literature, selecting from courses that cover classical, modern, or identity-based works. These courses deepen students’ understanding of theatre as both an art form and a cultural expression.A major component of the program is the concentration, which ranges from 18 to 24 units. Students can specialize in Acting, Design/Technical Theatre, Drama Education, Musical Theatre, or Theatre for Secondary Education. Each concentration offers focused training, such as acting techniques and voice work, design and production skills, teaching methods, or musical performance. All concentrations include professional preparation courses and a capstone experience, allowing students to apply their learning in a final project.Overall, the program combines creative expression, technical expertise, and academic study, preparing students for careers in performance, production, education, and related fields, as well as for advanced study in theatre arts.
