COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology requires the completion of 60 units within the major as part of the overall 120 units needed for graduation. The program is structured to provide a strong scientific and clinical foundation in communication sciences and disorders, combining coursework from biology, psychology, linguistics, and speech-language pathology.The lower-division requirements total 12 units and introduce students to essential background knowledge in biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics, and social or behavioral sciences. Students choose one course from each category, such as biology, chemistry or physics, statistics, and psychology or related disciplines. These courses help students understand the scientific and behavioral foundations necessary for studying human communication and its disorders.At the upper-division level, students complete 36 units of specialized coursework focused on speech-language pathology. Core subjects include child language development, speech and language science, phonetics and phonology, and the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism. Students also study various communication disorders, including child language disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, and neurogenic communication disorders. Additional courses in audiology, clinical methods, and cultural and linguistic diversity prepare students to work effectively with diverse populations.The program also includes 12 units of electives, allowing students to explore related areas such as linguistics, second language acquisition, counseling, disability studies, or American Sign Language. Some students may also gain practical experience through a practicum or independent study.Overall, this program offers a comprehensive blend of scientific knowledge, clinical preparation, and interdisciplinary learning, equipping students for graduate study and careers in speech-language pathology, audiology, and related health or educational fields.
