COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish requires the completion of 48 to 57 units within the major, as part of the total 120 units required for graduation. The program is structured to develop advanced language proficiency while providing a strong foundation in Hispanic culture, literature, and linguistics.The core requirements consist of 37 units and begin with intermediate-level Spanish courses or demonstrated equivalent proficiency. Students then progress to advanced coursework in Spanish language and composition, grammar, and literature. Key courses include advanced writing, applied grammar, and an introduction to literature from the Spanish-speaking world. Students also take “Spanish for the Professions,” which focuses on practical language use in career settings. Additionally, the curriculum includes seminar courses in literature, culture, and linguistics, allowing students to explore specialized topics in depth. A portfolio course helps students showcase their academic progress and achievements. Students may also take interdisciplinary or global-focused courses and gain exposure to language acquisition or international experiences.Beyond the core, students must complete a concentration ranging from 11 to 20 units. The Hispanic Language, Literature, and Civilization concentration provides an in-depth study of Spanish and Latin American cultures, dialects, and teaching methods. The Communication Studies concentration combines Spanish with communication, media, and journalism courses.
