COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences requires students to complete 45 units within the major as part of the total 120 units needed for graduation. The program is structured to provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation while allowing flexibility for students to explore multiple areas within the social sciences.The core requirements consist of 30 units, beginning with 12 units selected from courses that examine global issues, revolutions, race and racism, gender perspectives, capitalism, climate change, and broader social science topics. These courses help students develop a critical understanding of global and societal challenges. Additionally, students complete 6 units that focus on essential academic skills, including expository writing for the social sciences and a senior seminar, which strengthens research, analytical, and communication abilities.A distinctive feature of the program is its interdisciplinary approach. Students are required to complete 12 units in a field outside of their chosen concentration, such as economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology, or child and family studies. This ensures that students gain a broad perspective and are exposed to diverse academic disciplines.In addition to the core, students must complete a 15-unit concentration in a specific area of interest. Available concentrations include Child, Adolescent and Family Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Each concentration consists primarily of upper-division coursework, allowing students to develop specialized knowledge and expertise in their chosen field. Students may also design a customized concentration with approval from the program coordinator.Overall, this degree program offers a balanced combination of breadth and specialization, equipping students with critical thinking, research, and communication skills. It prepares graduates for careers in education, public service, social research, and other multidisciplinary professional fields, as well as for further academic study.
