COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Music requires 55 to 57 units within the major, contributing toward the 120 total units needed for graduation. The core curriculum provides a strong foundation in music theory, musicianship, performance, and technology. Students complete courses in diatonic and chromatic harmony, musicianship, global music, and electronic music production. In addition, they must complete applied study on their primary instrument, participate in major performance ensembles such as orchestra, band, or choir, attend Music Forum multiple times, and complete a Senior Project. These requirements ensure both academic and performance-based skill development.Students must choose one of three concentrations, each consisting of 26 to 28 units. The General Music Studies concentration focuses on advanced music theory, musicianship, and historical studies, including courses in musical form, 20th- and 21st-century theory, and Western music history across different periods. It also includes piano proficiency, upper-division applied study, and additional ensemble participation, emphasizing a well-rounded, traditional music education.The Music Industry Studies concentration combines music with entrepreneurship and modern industry practices. Students take courses in sound recording, electronic music history, and arts leadership, along with entrepreneurial studies. Electives allow exploration of areas such as songwriting, media composition, music technology, and film scoring, preparing students for careers in the commercial music and entertainment industries.The Music, Sound, and Technology concentration emphasizes digital and technical aspects of music. Students study sound recording, multimedia systems, and advanced electronic music, along with electives in composition, media production, game audio, and studio recording techniques. This pathway prepares students for careers in music production, audio engineering, and technology-driven creative fields.Overall, the program blends theoretical knowledge, performance experience, and specialized study, equipping graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills needed for diverse careers in music or further academic pursuits.
