COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies at CSUSB is structured to prepare students for teaching in California’s K–8 schools while providing a strong foundation in liberal studies. The program requires 120 units for graduation, with 78–105 units dedicated to the major, which is divided into four core areas: Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, Social Sciences & Child Development, and Program Requirements. These areas ensure that students gain broad interdisciplinary knowledge and the subject matter expertise necessary for classroom instruction. Courses include literature, art, music, digital media, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history, government, geography, and child development. Program requirements emphasize foundational pedagogy, assessment, and metacognition through courses such as CAL 2970, CAL 3970, CAL 5900, and EDMS 2301.Students select one of three concentrations: Pre-Credential General (9 units), Pre-Credential Spanish Studies (12 units), or Credential-Integrated (33 units). The Pre-Credential General Concentration allows students to design a tailored course of study across disciplines, while the Pre-Credential Spanish Studies Concentration focuses on bilingual education and the Bilingual Added Authorization. The Credential-Integrated Concentration combines the BA with the CSUSB Multiple Subject Credential coursework, offering a streamlined path to earning a teaching credential while completing the degree. Concentration coursework includes specialized studies in child development, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, bilingual education, instructional technology, diversity, and supervised student teaching.Overall, the program blends liberal arts knowledge with professional preparation, ensuring graduates are well-rounded, content-competent, and classroom-ready. Students develop critical thinking, instructional skills, and applied pedagogical expertise, positioning them for success in both general and bilingual elementary education settings.
