COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts offers students a flexible, interdisciplinary education designed to develop broad knowledge, critical thinking, and practical skills applicable across multiple fields. Degree requirements range from 39 to 52 units and include courses across four main categories: Applied and Acquired Skills, Digital Literacies, Research Techniques, and Experiential/Service Learning. Students choose courses that build multimodal communication, digital proficiency, and research competence, drawing from a wide array of subjects including art, language, communication, writing, media studies, music, philosophy, health sciences, and technology. Experiential and service learning options allow students to engage in internships, practicums, community-based projects, study abroad programs, and other applied learning experiences that foster practical application of knowledge. In addition, students complete an introductory course (CAL 2970) in Liberal Studies, a required minor field within the College of Arts and Letters (18 units), and a culminating experience (CAL 5900 and either CAL 5953 or CAL 3970) during their final semesters to integrate and assess their learning. A focus field of nine units in a discipline distinct from the minor ensures students gain additional depth, with at least six units at the upper-division level. Overall, the program emphasizes flexibility, interdisciplinary breadth, and hands-on learning, preparing graduates for diverse professional pathways and advanced studies while equipping them with transferable skills in critical thinking, communication, research, and creative problem-solving.
