COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Career and Technical Studies (BCTS) is designed to integrate professional experience with academic learning, allowing students to earn credit for substantial occupational and teaching expertise. The program is ideal for individuals who have spent years working in a technical or career-focused field and wish to translate that experience into a formal baccalaureate degree. Applicants are required to hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have a minimum of five years of work experience and/or education directly related to the subject they teach. Additionally, to qualify for the Career and Technical Evaluation of Competency (CTEC), candidates must have at least three years of full-time work experience and 1,500 hours of teaching experience, which is assessed through examinations, portfolios, interviews, and practical demonstrations.The BCTS curriculum consists of 27 to 36 units of Career and Technical Studies courses, covering foundational and advanced topics to enhance both pedagogical and professional competencies. Courses include Introduction to Career and Technical Studies (ECTS 3350), Global Educational Perspectives (ECTS 4350), Principles and Methods for Teaching Designated Subjects (ECTS 5010), Instructional Support for Teaching Designated Subjects (ECTS 5020), Principles of Career and Technical Education (ECTS 5040), Organization and Structure of Career and Technical Programs (ECTS 5080), Field Work in Designated Subjects (ECTS 5180), Instructional Technology for Career and Technical Educators (ECTS 5190), Curriculum Development for Career and Technical Programs (ECTS 5200), Assessing Student Progress (ECTS 5210), Directing and Managing Occupational Programs (ECTS 5220), Educational Research and Learning Theory (ECTS 5230), and Topics in Career and Technical Education (ECTS 5410).In addition to coursework, up to 30 semester units can be credited through the CTEC process, which formally recognizes a student’s prior occupational and teaching experience. This combination of experiential and academic credit enables students to complete the 60-unit B.A. efficiently while developing advanced knowledge in career and technical education. The program prepares graduates for leadership, instructional, and administrative roles within technical education, workforce development, and related career-focused fields.
