COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Arabic program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Arabic language, literature, and culture, preparing them for advanced study, professional communication, and cross-cultural engagement. The program requires 43 total units, beginning with nine lower-division units that include Beginning Arabic I and II and a course in Arabic Literature in Translation. Students then complete eight units of intermediate-level courses, choosing from Arabic Communication, Arabic Literature and Societies, Arabic Media, or Arabic for Professional Communication. Upper-division requirements include four courses totaling eight units, such as Arabic Conversation Activity, Writing Explorations, Female Voices in Arab American Literature, and Voices and Visions from the Arab World. To deepen knowledge and provide flexibility, students select 18 elective units from a broad array of courses covering regional history, culture, media, literature, linguistics, and pedagogical studies. Elective options include courses like Anthropology of the Middle East, Arab Culture, Media and Identity, Introduction to Arabic Linguistics, Classical Islamic Civilization, Modern Middle East, Ancient Egyptian History, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, among others. This combination of language instruction, cultural study, and elective exploration ensures students gain linguistic proficiency alongside a nuanced understanding of social, historical, and literary contexts in the Arab world. The program is structured to foster analytical thinking, cross-cultural competence, and practical language skills, supporting careers in education, international relations, media, translation, and other fields requiring Arabic language expertise. By completing the lower-division, intermediate, upper-division, and elective requirements, students earn a total of 43 units, equipping them with both the academic foundation and specialized knowledge necessary for professional and scholarly pursuits related to the Arabic-speaking world.
