COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Sacramento State requires 30 to 32 units, combining core courses, specialization courses, electives, and a culminating experience. Students complete 8 units of required core courses, including Engineering Analysis I and II (or Stochastic Modeling for Engineers) and Research Methodology. In consultation with an advisor, students select at least three courses (9 units) to develop a focus area in one of four specializations: Aerospace Systems, Design and Dynamic Systems, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering, or Thermal and Fluid Systems. Each specialization includes targeted courses such as Optimum Mechanical Design, Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Modeling, Mechanical Design and Failure Analysis, Advanced Vibration Theory, Intelligent Product Design and Manufacturing, and Advanced Heat Transfer, among others, tailored to provide in-depth knowledge and applied skills relevant to that area. Students also complete 7 to 9 units of electives, chosen in consultation with an advisor, which may include undergraduate courses to expand expertise. The program culminates with a thesis, project, or comprehensive examination (4 to 6 units) that integrates the knowledge and skills acquired through coursework, allowing students to demonstrate research, design, and problem-solving abilities. The thesis must be orally presented and defended before the student’s Thesis Committee and approved by the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Coordinator or Department Chair. This combination of core courses, specialization focus, electives, and culminating experience ensures students acquire both theoretical understanding and practical expertise, preparing graduates for professional practice, research, or doctoral study in mechanical engineering.
