COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Computer Science at Sacramento State requires a minimum of a baccalaureate degree, a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 units, and satisfactory GRE general test scores. Applicants must have strong mathematical preparation, including two semesters of calculus and one semester of calculus-based probability and statistics, and a solid foundation in computer science, including programming proficiency, discrete structures, computer architecture, operating systems, and systems programming in UNIX. Advanced preparation in upper-division courses such as Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis, Computer Software Engineering, Database Management Systems, Computability and Formal Languages, Computer Organization, Computer Networking Fundamentals, and Operating System Principles is expected, with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Deficiencies must be removed before applying. Students must submit a university and departmental application, official transcripts, and GRE scores. Advancement to candidacy requires completion of at least 12 units of graduate-level courses with a 3.0 GPA and a Graduate Writing Intensive course, after which students can register for the thesis or project. The program requires 33 to 30 units to graduate, with 16 units of required courses including Professional Writing in Computer Science, Programming Language Principles, Computer Systems Structure, Algorithms and Paradigms, Research Methodology, and Preparation for Culminating Experience. Students must also complete 9 units covering three breadth areas selected from Computer Architecture/Computer Engineering, Database Management Systems, Information Assurance and Security, Intelligent Systems, Networks and Communications, Software Engineering, and Systems Software. A restricted elective of 3 units is required, and the program concludes with a 2-unit culminating experience through either a Master’s Thesis or Master’s Project. All courses must be completed within seven years, and no grade below “C” may count toward the degree. The program ensures students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in computer science, preparing them for professional work, research, or doctoral studies.
