COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering requires students to complete 15 units of specialization courses, with a minimum of 12 units taken within a chosen area of specialization. Up to 3 units may be satisfied by 200-level coursework outside the selected specialization, excluding CE 299. Students may choose from five areas of specialization. In Environmental Engineering, courses include Groundwater Hydrology, Environmental Quality Processes I, II, and III, Water Quality Management, Transport of Chemicals in Soil Systems, and Systems Analysis of Resource Development. Geotechnical Engineering focuses on Advanced Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering I and II, Geotechnical Modeling, Ground Modification Engineering, Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, and Geosynthetics. Structural Engineering offers courses such as Matrix Structural Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Nonlinear Structural Analysis, Advanced Steel Design, Advanced Design in Reinforced Concrete, Dynamics and Earthquake Response of Structures, Structural Systems for Buildings, and Pre-stressed Concrete Bridge Design. Transportation Engineering includes Analysis and Control of Traffic Systems, Transportation Planning, Traffic Flow Theory, Advanced Transportation Facility Design, Pavement Design, and Geosynthetics. Water Resources Engineering encompasses Water Resources Planning, Hydrometeorology, Groundwater Hydrology, Advanced Engineering Hydraulics, Hydrologic Modeling, and Systems Analysis of Resource Development. These courses provide specialized technical knowledge and advanced analytical skills in each sub-discipline, preparing students for professional practice, research, and problem-solving in civil engineering.
