COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Literature requires the completion of 30 semester units, combining foundational courses, concentration courses, and a culminating experience. The program begins with 16 units of required courses, including Methods and Materials of Literary Research (ENGL 200A), Contemporary Theory (ENGL 201D), Seminar in Literary History (ENGL 275), and Teaching College Composition (ENGL 220A), which provide students with a strong foundation in literary research, theory, historical context, and pedagogical practice. The Literature concentration consists of 12 units, where students select courses from the ENGL 240 series in British Literature, as well as options in the ENGL 250 series for American Literature or ENGL 280 series for Minority Literature. Students also select one elective ENGL course from various series including 100, 140, 141, 145, 150, 155, 160, 165, 170, 180, 185, 240, 250, 260, 265, 280, or specific courses such as 190Q, 299, or 410F, allowing them to tailor their studies to their individual academic interests. The program concludes with a 2-unit culminating experience (ENGL 500), in which students integrate their research, analytical skills, and literary knowledge into a final project or thesis. This structure ensures that graduates develop both analytical and research competencies while gaining a deep understanding of literary traditions and theory, preparing them for careers in teaching, professional fields, or further doctoral study.
