COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing requires the completion of 30 semester units, combining foundational courses, concentration courses, and a culminating experience. The program begins with 16 units of required courses, including Methods and Materials of Literary Research (ENGL 200A), Teaching College Composition (ENGL 220A), Seminar in Literary History (ENGL 275), and Contemporary Theory (ENGL 201D), which provide students with a strong foundation in literary research, pedagogy, historical and contemporary theory, and critical analysis. The concentration in Creative Writing consists of 12 units, where students select courses from the ENGL 230 or 130 series, including options such as Master Class in Writing Fiction (ENGL 230X) or Master Class in Writing Poetry (ENGL 230Y), allowing students to focus on developing their creative writing skills in a chosen genre. The program concludes with a 2-unit culminating experience (ENGL 500), in which students synthesize their knowledge and creative work through a project, portfolio, or thesis. This structure ensures that graduates develop both analytical and creative competencies, combining scholarly understanding with practical writing expertise, and prepares them for careers in teaching, writing, publishing, or further graduate study.
