COURSE CURRICULUM

The Stem Cell concentration within the Biological Sciences graduate program at California State University, Sacramento requires a total of 30 units and is designed to provide specialized training in molecular biology, regenerative medicine, and stem cell technologies. The curriculum is heavily focused on advanced scientific knowledge and research skills, with at least 18 units required at the 200-level to ensure academic rigor and depth.Students complete 25 units of core coursework covering key areas such as scientific inquiry, molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. The program also includes specialized courses in stem cell biology, manufacturing practices, and developmental and regenerative medicine. In addition, students participate in research-focused activities such as research conferences and seminars in molecular and cellular biology, which help strengthen their understanding of current scientific advancements. A significant component of the core requirement is independent study through “Problems in Biological Sciences,” which students take multiple times to build hands-on research experience under faculty supervision.The program includes a 2-unit culminating requirement in the form of a master’s project, where students apply their knowledge to a focused research or applied scientific topic, often presented as an internship project report. To further enhance their expertise, students must also complete 3 units of additional coursework selected from advanced topics such as human molecular genetics, immunology, evolution, or specialized chemistry courses like protein biochemistry and nucleic acid chemistry.Overall, the Stem Cell concentration offers an intensive, research-oriented curriculum that prepares students for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, and advanced scientific research, as well as for further doctoral study in related fields.
