COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s degree in Statistics requires students to complete a comprehensive curriculum that combines mathematical foundations, statistical theory, computing, and specialized study. The program begins with lower division core courses totaling 21 to 22 units. These courses establish the mathematical and analytical skills necessary for advanced statistical work. Students complete Calculus I, Calculus II, and Calculus III, along with Introduction to Linear Algebra. They also take an introductory statistics course such as Introduction to Probability and Statistics or Introduction to Statistics. In addition, students must choose one programming-related course, such as Mathematical Programming, Introduction to Programming Logic, Programming Concepts and Methodology, Visual Programming in BASIC, or Introduction to C Programming. These courses help students build computational thinking and programming skills that are essential for modern data analysis.At the upper division level, students complete 19 units of advanced statistical coursework. These courses provide deeper knowledge of statistical theory and practical data analysis techniques. Required courses include Introduction to Probability Theory and Introduction to Mathematical Statistics, which form the theoretical foundation of statistical reasoning. Students also study Statistical Computing to learn how to analyze data using professional software and programming tools. Additional courses include Linear Models and Statistical Learning, which focus on modern methods for analyzing complex data sets and identifying patterns. The program also includes Community Service Learning in Statistics, which allows students to apply statistical skills in real community-based projects, and a Statistics Capstone Project where students complete a comprehensive analysis of real-world data.After completing the core coursework, students must choose an emphasis area consisting of 9 units to gain specialized knowledge. The Applied Statistics emphasis allows students to select courses such as Combinatorics, Introduction to Formal Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Linear Programming, Big Data Analysis, or Operations Research. The Data Science emphasis focuses on modern data analysis techniques and includes Big Data processing along with electives such as Numerical Analysis, Linear Programming, Formal Mathematics, or Operations Research. The Mathematical Statistics emphasis prepares students for graduate study and includes courses like Introduction to Formal Mathematics, Functions of a Real Variable, and advanced topics such as Modern Algebra or Linear Algebra. In total, the statistics major requires 49 to 50 units and equips students with strong analytical, computational, and data interpretation skills for a wide range of careers.
