COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health requires students to complete a combination of lower division prerequisite courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration that aligns with their professional interests. The program begins with 16 units of required pre-major coursework that provides a scientific and analytical foundation for public health studies. These lower division courses include Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to General Chemistry, and Introduction to Statistics. Together, these courses help students understand the biological processes that affect human health while also developing quantitative skills needed to analyze health data and research findings.After completing the pre-major requirements, students move on to 15 to 16 units of upper division public health coursework. These courses introduce students to the key principles and practices of the public health field. Core subjects include Introduction to Public Health, Health Data Analysis, Epidemiology, and Introduction to the U.S. Healthcare System. Students also complete a fieldwork course in health or safety, which provides hands-on experience in a professional setting. This practical component allows students to apply classroom knowledge while gaining real-world experience in health promotion, health policy, or safety-related environments.In addition to the core curriculum, students must choose one concentration consisting of 27 to 31 units. The available concentrations include Community Health Education, Health Care Administration, and Occupational Health and Safety. Each concentration focuses on specialized coursework designed to prepare students for specific career paths within the public health sector.Students who select the Occupational Health and Safety concentration study topics related to workplace health, safety management, and risk prevention. The curriculum includes courses such as Fundamentals of Safety and Health, Occupational Health, Occupational Safety, Occupational Health and Safety Laws and Regulations, and Cause and Control of Occupational Loss. Students must also complete a chemistry course related to organic or biological chemistry. In addition, students select several elective courses from areas such as microbiology, environmental law, environmental toxicology, environmental history, risk management and insurance, or physics. These courses help students understand the environmental, biological, and regulatory factors that influence workplace safety and occupational health.Overall, the program requires approximately 58 to 63 units and prepares graduates for careers in public health agencies, workplace safety programs, environmental health organizations, and other fields focused on protecting the health and safety of workers and communities.
