COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Public Health requires students to complete a combination of lower division prerequisite courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration. The program begins with 16 units of required pre-major coursework that provides students with a strong scientific and analytical foundation. These lower division courses include Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to General Chemistry, and Introduction to Statistics. These subjects help students understand the biological and chemical processes that affect human health while also developing the quantitative skills needed to analyze public health data. After completing the pre-major courses, students progress to the upper division core curriculum, which includes 15 to 16 units of required courses. These courses introduce students to the principles and practices of public health. Key subjects include Introduction to Public Health, Health Data Analysis, Epidemiology, and Introduction to the U.S. Healthcare System. Students also complete a fieldwork course in health or safety, which allows them to gain practical experience in a real-world public health setting. This field experience helps students apply their academic knowledge while developing professional skills related to health promotion, program planning, and public health practice. In addition to the core courses, students must choose a concentration consisting of 27 to 31 units. The available concentrations include Community Health Education, Health Care Administration, and Occupational Health and Safety. Each concentration provides specialized coursework that prepares students for specific career paths within the broader public health field.Students who select the Community Health Education concentration complete 27 units of coursework focused on promoting health and preventing disease in communities. Courses include Fundamentals of Safety and Health, Disease Prevention, Human Ecology and Health, Public Health Policy and Administration, Community Health Promotion, and Understanding Human Sexuality. Students also study community health planning and evaluation and examine health issues related to aging populations. In addition, students choose one elective course from topics such as global health, health psychology, ethical considerations in public health, or alcohol and drug use.
