COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology requires students to complete a combination of lower division courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration that aligns with their academic interests and career goals. The program begins with 8 units of required lower division coursework, including Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. These courses provide students with a strong understanding of the structure and function of the human body, which is essential for studying physical activity, exercise performance, and movement science.Students must also complete 23 units of upper division courses that explore the scientific, social, and educational aspects of kinesiology. These courses include kinesiology research and practice, history and philosophy of physical education and sport, sociology of sport, sport pedagogy, exercise and sport physiology, applied kinesiology and biomechanics, motor learning and control, and sport and exercise psychology. Together, these courses help students understand how the body moves, how individuals learn physical skills, and how social and psychological factors influence participation in sport and physical activity.In addition to the core coursework, students must choose one of several concentrations that allow them to specialize in a particular area of kinesiology. Available concentrations include Athletic Care, Athletic Coaching Education, Physical Activity and Wellness, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Athletic Administration. Each concentration offers specialized coursework designed to prepare students for specific professional careers within the field of physical activity and sport.Students who choose the Physical Education Teacher Education concentration complete 29 units of coursework focused on preparing them for teaching physical education in school settings. The curriculum includes courses such as elementary physical education curriculum and content, secondary physical education curriculum, and assessment strategies in physical education, which help students learn how to design effective physical education programs and evaluate student performance. Students also complete a series of professional activity courses that provide practical experience in teaching various physical activities, including dual sports, creative movement and dance, team sports, individual sports, nontraditional games, and health-related fitness activities.In addition, the program includes a course in adapted physical education that prepares students to work with individuals who have diverse physical and developmental needs. Overall, the program requires approximately 59 to 60 units and provides students with the knowledge and teaching skills necessary to pursue careers in physical education and school-based physical activity programs.
