COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology requires students to complete a combination of lower division courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration that supports their academic interests and career goals. The program begins with 8 units of lower division coursework, including Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. These courses provide students with a foundational understanding of the structure and function of the human body, which is essential for studying movement, exercise, and physical performance.Students also complete 23 units of upper division courses that explore the scientific, social, and educational aspects of kinesiology. These courses include kinesiology research and practice, history and philosophy of physical education and sport, sociology of sport, sport pedagogy, exercise and sport physiology, applied kinesiology and biomechanics, motor learning and control, and sport and exercise psychology. Together, these subjects help students understand how the body moves, how physical skills are learned, and how psychological and social factors influence participation in physical activity and sport.In addition to the core curriculum, students must select one of several concentrations that allow them to specialize in a particular area of interest. These concentrations include Athletic Administration, Athletic Care, Athletic Coaching Education, Physical Activity and Wellness, and Physical Education Teacher Education. Each concentration provides specialized coursework that prepares students for specific professional roles within the field of kinesiology.Students who choose the Physical Activity and Wellness concentration complete 28 units of coursework focused on promoting health, fitness, and active lifestyles. Required courses include exercise for healthy living, strength and conditioning, planning and managing fitness centers, sport and aging, professional fitness activities, and a supervised field experience in kinesiology. These courses provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to fitness programming, wellness promotion, and fitness facility management.In addition, students complete 12 units of elective courses that allow them to further explore topics such as women and sport, psychological skills for performance, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, weight training, exercise physiology, sports nutrition, stress management, and injury care. Overall, the program requires approximately 59 to 60 units and prepares students for careers in fitness training, wellness coaching, community health programs, and other health and physical activity related professions.
