COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology requires students to complete a combination of lower division courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration that supports their career goals. The program begins with 8 units of required lower division coursework, including Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. These courses provide students with a strong scientific foundation by introducing the structure and function of the human body, which is essential for understanding movement, exercise performance, and injury prevention.Students also complete 23 units of upper division courses that explore the scientific, social, and educational aspects of kinesiology. These courses include kinesiology research and practice, history and philosophy of physical education and sport, and sociology of sport, which examine the social and historical influences on physical activity and sport. Additional courses such as sport pedagogy, exercise and sport physiology, applied kinesiology and biomechanics, motor learning and control, and sport and exercise psychology help students understand how the body moves, how individuals learn physical skills, and how psychological factors influence athletic performance.In addition to the core coursework, students must select one of several concentrations that align with their interests and professional goals. Options include Athletic Care, Athletic Coaching Education, Physical Activity and Wellness, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Sport Management. Each concentration provides specialized coursework designed to prepare students for specific career paths within the field of kinesiology.Students who choose the Athletic Coaching Education concentration complete 29 units of specialized coursework that focuses on coaching, athlete development, and sport leadership. Required courses include strength and conditioning, psychological skills for peak performance, leadership and communication, coaching theory, ethics and inclusion in coaching, and a supervised field experience in coaching. Students also complete professional activity courses that provide practical experience in coaching various types of sports. In addition, students select 9 units of electives from courses related to sport activities, nutrition, leadership, community sport programming, stress management, and injury care.Overall, the program requires 59 to 60 units and provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in coaching and sport leadership. The curriculum prepares graduates for careers in athletic coaching, youth and community sport programs, and sport leadership roles, while also providing a foundation for advanced study in coaching, sport psychology, and other sport-related graduate programs.
