COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology requires students to complete a combination of lower division courses, upper division core courses, and a selected concentration that aligns with their career goals. The program begins with 8 units of required lower division coursework, which includes Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. These courses introduce students to the structure and function of the human body and provide a strong scientific foundation for understanding movement, physical performance, and injury prevention.Students must also complete 23 units of upper division courses that explore the scientific and social aspects of kinesiology. These courses include kinesiology research and practice, the history and philosophy of physical education and sport, and the sociology of sport, which examine the cultural, historical, and societal influences on sport and physical activity. Additional courses such as sport pedagogy, exercise and sport physiology, applied kinesiology and biomechanics, motor learning and control, and sport and exercise psychology focus on the physiological and behavioral factors that influence human movement and athletic performance. Together, these courses provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into how individuals learn, perform, and benefit from physical activity.In addition to the core coursework, students must select one of five concentrations that support different professional interests. These concentrations include Athletic Administration, Athletic Care, Athletic Coaching Education, Physical Activity and Wellness, and Physical Education Teacher Education. Each concentration provides specialized coursework designed to prepare students for specific career paths within kinesiology.Students who choose the Athletic Care concentration complete 29 units of specialized coursework focused on injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Required courses include general chemistry, general physics, clinical evaluation of upper and lower extremities, care of athletic injuries, therapeutic exercise, and a supervised field experience in kinesiology. These courses provide both scientific knowledge and hands-on learning opportunities related to sports medicine and injury management.Students also complete 8 units of electives selected from areas such as nutrition, sports nutrition, aging and health, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, epidemiology, stress management, and statistics. Overall, the program requires 59 to 60 units and prepares students for careers in athletic training, sports medicine, and related health or paramedical fields, as well as for further professional or graduate study.
