COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science requires students to complete a structured curriculum that combines foundational science courses, specialized health science classes, and elective coursework. The program begins with required lower division courses totaling 13 units. These courses provide a strong scientific foundation for understanding the human body and basic chemical principles. Students complete Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, which focus on the structure and function of the human body, along with an introductory course in general chemistry. These subjects are essential for students planning to pursue careers or further training in the health professions.In addition to the required courses, students must complete 5 to 8 units of lower division electives. These electives allow students to broaden their understanding of health-related topics by choosing from courses such as basic biological concepts, microbiology, human development, nutrition, psychology, sociology, statistics, or pharmacology. These courses help students develop knowledge in areas that support health science studies and provide useful preparation for various healthcare careers.At the upper division level, students complete 15 units of core courses focused on health science concepts and the broader context of healthcare. These courses include an introduction to health science, human ecology and health, and health psychology. Students also select courses related to aging and ethical practices in healthcare. Aging-related courses examine health and wellbeing in older populations, while ethics courses address professional responsibilities, healthcare systems, and moral decision-making in health and public service fields.Students must also complete 18 to 19 units of health science electives, selecting six courses from a wide range of options. These electives allow students to focus on specific areas such as physiology, neuroscience, nutrition, public health policy, health communication, psychology, safety, or recreation and health promotion. Some courses also explore topics like infectious diseases, abnormal psychology, human sexuality, and community health services.Overall, the program requires between 51 and 55 units and offers flexibility for students to tailor their studies according to their career goals. Through its combination of science, health studies, and interdisciplinary electives, the curriculum prepares students for careers or further education in allied health and healthcare-related professions.
